Swain, NY March 23, 2003

The struggle was intense, riddled with injury, punctuated by great drama and is over for 2003.

527 Doug Bellinger (SD) is the overall champ in the Vet Pro class for the 2003 season.

The day began with some question as to Bellinger’s ability to compete. A hip injury from the week previous called for some special taping by track medic Mike Pilato. With the season championship hanging in the balance, the decision was made to compete. Ski Doo pilot Jerry Butler (114) was nursing a wrist injury from last week but was on the line for the start.

With the championship point separation between Bellinger and leader 133 Bob Austin (AC) a mere 3 points, Bellinger gained an immediate advantage by topping Austin in both heats.

The main kicked off with a hole shot by Bellinger followed closely by 777 Wade Clar (SD) followed by an intense struggle between Austin and 644 Sean Severance (POL).

The finish saw Bellinger followed by an ever threatening Clar and a mad dash by Severance who passed Austin feet before the flag followed by a nasty getoff.

The BEST Vet class was all it promised to be this year and more.

Until next year, race on !!
